I believe Sanjaya's time to go would have been long before he ever made it into the top 12. I do think that he was a publicity stunt. He may have been well liked but it is a popular opinion that he had no talent as far as singing is concerned. I think American Idol probably lost a lot of viewers who were aggrivated to see him on the show week after week while deserving contestants where voted off and he kept his spot on the show...I was one of them.
I was also surprised to see Blake in the bottom 3 but not Lakisha. I like Lakisha but I do not think she did well at all with the country singing portion of the show. I don't think her horizons are very expanded when it comes to music. She seems to focus most on R&B which is okay, but I like to see that the contestants are able to expand to other genres as well.
I also agree with Jackie B. I don't see anyone on this year's Idol that I would ever be interested in listening to except maybe Chris. Last season I was very interested in many contesants and have 2 of their CDs (Chris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler) and like one of their singles (Katherine McPhee "Over it"). This year has really lacked the ability to keep my interest.

The judges did not honestly evaluate Sanjaya in past weeks. They stopped short of being brutally honest. This was done for the hype - with Sanjaya in the top 10, he will be on the Idol tour and bring in the young kids to the concerts, boosting sales. However, when the show lost all credibility and fans became too irate, it was time for the idol manufacturing to stop. Simon spoke the truth boldly and the audience reacted in their normal way. The loser is Sanjaya for whom I feel sorry because he is just a kid and has been made the brunt of a bad joke.

Finally!
I honestly rarely watch Idol, other than the auditions and the final night.
But after i heard about Sanjaya, i watched this weeks elim. and last weeks.
I think he survived off sheer luck. Lucky that it was him who fans decided to stick behind and not someone else with little to no talent.
But either way, i can't see anyone on this years Idol worth listening to anyway. Are they running out of talent? More people show up to auditions, but seems like every year it's less talent.

"Bout time Sanjaya got outta Dodge. I think Melinda is the best vocally, but that younger girl might get it based on personality.

Sanjaya should have never been in the top 24.... it was done just for ratings.
