The Japanese were NOT on the verge of surrendering, and that's WHY the bomb was dropped. President Truman knew that to win the war he either had to invade Japan and likely lose a million or more Americans, or drop the bomb to force them into surrender. In fact, it wasn't really the Hiroshima bomb that ended the war, it was the one several days later on Nagasaki. Japan wouldn't surrender after the first one, and finally did after the second.

Dropping the bomb will always be the subject of historical debate. Was it necessary? Were the alternatives? We'll never know... What we DO know however, is that is was the most destructive, most horiffic. most devestating action anyone ever took in wartime. Sadly though, many didn't learn from this, and many countries are still either building them or otherwise threatening to use them.

Albert Einstein (who was a pacifist), who wrote a letter to Roosevelt urging him to devlop the bomb before Hitler did, said of the bomb "I don't know what weapons will be used in World War III, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

The Japanese were not on the verge of surrendering, even though they had no hope of winning the war. Those in charge wanted to fight to the last man. This would have meant an invasion of Japan and millions of deaths. They refused to surrender even after the first bomb. It took the second bomb before they surrendered.
After the surrender, many Japanese military officers killed their men and themselves rather than live with defeat.
The civilians, however, were very willing to make peace.

An atomic bomb makes use of a typical explosive to set off the reaction. A thermonuke makes use of an atomic bomb for a set off. An atomic bomb splits atoms. A thermonuke fuses them. A thermonuke is thousands of circumstances greater useful.
