I really want to make my own compost but I don't have any place in my yard where I can just pile up waste so I was wondering if I could make it in a trash can (like the ones used to put grass cuttings and twigs for the truck to pick up). If I do that then how should I start it and with what and how can I make sure that air gets in the bottom? Thank you all for your ideas.

A trash can is a very good way to make a cheap composter. I suggest you cut out the bottom and make numerous holes in the side of the can to let in air. Alternate layers of green matter and brown matter as you would in any composter. Place it in a location to let the sun warm it up and add water so it doesn't dry out. Adding red worms will make the job go quicker and provide richer compost.

You can buy a compost barrel that has the air holes. I started mine with grass clippings some dirt, vegetables and banana peels. And put in a little granular fertilizer and a little water. turn the material every day if you want, it breaks down faster if you do.
