1. The elements in grp 1A belong to the alkali metal fam. You have been given aq test solutions of 1M sulfuric acid & 1M hydrochloric acid. Explain how you would use these test solutions to determine if an unknown aq solution contained Ag+, Ba+2, or Na+ ions. Explain the tests you would perform, the expected outcomes & how the results would allow you to determine the presence or absence of the particular cations.
2. The ions A-, B-, & C- are all form colorless solutions. Their molecular counterparts form brilliantly colored solutions, where A2 is green, B2 is blue and C2 is red. When a student mixes the anions C- & A- with a solution of B2, the following results were obtained:
B2+2C-=red
B2+2A-=blue
a.Rank A2, B2, & C2 in order of increasing oxidizing strength.
b.Would the following rxn occur? Explain. A2+2C-=c2+2A-
c.Devise a single step test that one could use to analyze an unknown solution containing 1 of 3 anions A-, B-, or C-. Explain how & why this would work.
