where would you choose to go?

This one isn't even close. St John's isn't a particularly good school. It is not very selective. The average SAT scores are pretty low and only a fairly small percentage finished in the top 10% of their high school classes. It is also the single ugliest college campus that I have ever seen.

Syracuse is much more highly regarded.

Depends on what major you plan on studying. The previous poster is right about the city of Syracuse being a dump (it's a rustbelt city) but the University is very very rich (educationally as well as financially). The Newhouse school of communications the poster also mentions is a top school for journalism. The film school however is even better. Not a part of the Newhouse school, but the School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Syracuse is also one of the top party schools in the North East. So if you want to party, there's always a party. If you want to study, the money that goes into the faculty and campus offers more than one student could possibly absorb in just 4 years.

The Syracuse University Study Abroad program is also one of the top in the nation. Florence Italy in particular.

As for St. Johns, I don't know anything about it.

I suggest you pick a major or two you think you want to study, then visit both schools in person, interview their faculty, and decide which is best for you.

Depends on your course of study. But Syracuse has the overall better ranking.

Syracuse... but it really does depend on what you are going to study and where you plan to work and then (finally) what deal either Univ will offer you.
