My laptop crashed a few months ago (a Dell Inspiron, don't get one!) and I need a new one. I'm a poor college student so I have a limited budget. Any brand will do except Dell b/c their computers and customer service suck. Can anyone suggest decent computers between $1000-1200 (and preferably with a payment plan)?

Okay Ms Dell... you assume wrong. I bought the computer in February of last year and the computer crashed 6 days before my warranty was to expire. I called customer service and had to wait a whopping hour and 17 minutes before anyone spoke to me! The person that I spoke to was pleasant, but did not speak English properly, which made it difficult for me to understand him. I got transfer to 2 other people who didn't speak english. They sent a box for me to return the computer and I sent it back. 3 days later with only 2 days left on my warranty they tell me that my hard drive was fried and that I would need a replacement. They told me that it would cost almost $500 which was obscene because the repair was more than half the cost of the computer. I treat all of my electronics with care and I never so much as dropped my laptop ( though I had a close call in JFK at the metal detector) and have 2 other computers that I have no problems with. So before you make assumptions think b4 u post!!

with $1000-$1200, you can buy a very good laptop, such as the Sony vaio in officedepot for only $1099. With that much $$, just go to your local office depot, best buy to find one, just make sure to get at least 1GB RAM and 60GB hard drive if you want to run it smoothly with Vista. Core 2 duo is the best option out there now, you can buy any other for cheaper price.

And how long since you have had that computer from dell? Do you expect a notebook to give you 10 years efficiency without obstacles? Do you expect your notebook to stay in good health condition when you fail to gently sit it down on the table or desk?
Do you expect your notebook ROM drive to keep responding to you when you keep slamming it?
Oh wait, my friend next door bought a Dell and it was defective. He called Dell, put on hold for 4 minutes to pull up personal information, then he was shipped a box to return the notebook the following day. After having sent in the notebook for repair, he received it back just in 3 days. That's what you called suck?
Oh wait, I assume you expected Dell to repair your computer after your warranty has expired. Sweetie, it doesn't work like that.
And since you decide to get rid of today/s leader in computer technology, I hope you won't have another bad experience, which I ultimately doubt.
You have a great day.
UPDATE:
I do not understand why people keep saying Dell representatives speak poor English. They speak natural English, and also better than most Americans and Canadians.
I understand they use phenomenal words that aren't introduced much to average English speakers. so I understand your point there.
Also, you knew your warranty was imminent to expire and yet failed to upgrade your warranty. That's not Dell's responsibility, either, sweetie. And if you had upgraded your warranty, your HD would be replaced free of charge.
Not only Dell charges $500 to replace notebook parts, all vendors do. Plus, not just Dell's HD goes within a year, all vendor's HD goes within a year, too. When you plan to degrade Dell products, make sure you sit down and organize your statement.
If you were put on hold for an unreasonable time, use their LIVE CHAT on their website. This way, you will be able to read and get through faster than reaching them by phone. One inconvenient, though, Dell representatives use big words, so you'll need to be prepared.
You have a great day.

There truly isn't this sort of element as a "solid gaming pc" computers in simple terms! There are despite the fact that some laptops extra qualified to run video games. in simple terms ensure it has minimum 2 gigs RAM, good processor and video card.

I'd suggest a Toshiba Satellite notebook, which I have; Maybe an HP Pavillion; Sony Vaio
Definately stay away from Compaq!! They don't last very long. I used to have one and the same thing happened to me.
Good luck....

Hmmm, I have a dell inspirion and it has lasted me a while. No problems and dell has been very helpful with me. But since you prefer anything but a dell, Gateway has great prices! Never used them so I couldnt tell you about quality.

there are so many to choose from these days, it all really depends on your budget and what "you" need to accomplish. computers are just like any other tool, we all need them for various purposes. I would get a cheaper one for like $800-$100 and spend the rest on an external drive to back up your important data and projects on.
