Algae is an orgainism that grows in your aquarium, rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, and even in the ocean. It's photosynthetic, so it can make it's own food, and is often eaten by other organisms where it grows. It can also make a good place for spawning, or for baby fish or other organisms to hide if it's large enough. Some kinds of algae are only one cell, while others like sargassum (a kind of seaweed) can grow about 40 feet (about 12 meters). In an aquarium, it's often considered a nuisance because it covers the decorations and glass, or makes the water look cloudy.

Algae can be controlled by doing weekly water changes to remove nutrients it uses as a fertilizer, by turning off the lights, scraping it off the glass before you do a water change, and using algae eating fish. Plecostomous, Siamese algae eaters, and otocinclus are good for freshwater, tangs and some blennies are used in saltwater. Some shrimp, snails, and crabs will eat algae as well. As a last resort, there are chemicals that can be used, but I'd rather try natural methods to control it first.

A algae in a fish tank is the one that eats all the crap off the tank to keep it clean. Mine has gotten so big now though all he eats is fish food.
