What can I do about my fiancee' car getting broken in to? We live in Texas and his parents are saying there is nothing we can do leagally. It was in the shop getting fixed because it broke down when someone WITH THE KEYS got in his car, took all his valuables that he, stupidly, left in it, but out of sight and even locked in the glove compartment. They even locked the glove compartment back up after being in it. Thing is, his parents say to even have video proof they need a sapina. He is upset, to say the least, and i don't blame him. Please, we need help on this A.S.A.P.

Who did the deed? If you don't have a suspect then there is nothing you can do. If the car was at a repair shop and you think one of workers did it then you still have to prove it.

You can't have the entire shop arrested. If you do then each person only has to say the other person did it and so introduce probably doubt thus breaking the case.

Your parents are right you need videotape or a witness to the crime in order to file a criminal complaint.

Now you can file a civil case and sue the repair shop company, but you have to prove that one of their employees did the deed. They can claim that the keys are put on a board where anyone can reach them, if they go behind the counter.

The best thing that you can do is to call or write the company, include the manager's name, the names of those who were on duty in the shop at the time, the address and phone number of the shop and the shop number. You can get all this information by talking with the shop's manager. If you complain to the headquarters (get that address or phone number from the manager) then they will try to do something about the problem (provided you can prove that something was stolen from the car in the first place). They may only have the manager give a lecture on honesty, but at least they will do something.

Call the cops and file a report, period. There may not be anything that you can do, but you can always file the report.

Most likely, as everything was locked properly, and the vehicle was under someone else's control and on their property, and they had keys, it's going to be your word against theirs.
