"This should be written as two words: a lot. A lot of people make the mistake of writing them as one. You would not dream of writing, "I am going for alittle walk," so use that to remember that these are two separate words. Remind yourself that just as you would not write alittle you should not write alot."

It's a lot, I can assure you!

I have noticed that a lot of people seem to make that common mistake on this particular website, for some unknown & strange reason...

And spelt can be spelt or spelled either way (that comment is addressed to KG!), it's up to you.

A lot. Even spelled correctly, it is a casual phrase (not a single word). Usually for a formal document, like a term paper, you are better off using something like "many" or "much", as in "I own many CDs,"rather than "I own a lot of CDs," or "It rains much of the time there," rather than "It rains a lot of the time there." It isn't incorrect, just colloquial.

"a lot" it's always separated. A mistake of many. Also, the other word is "spelled" not "spelt"

A lot is a lot of words. Well, only two, but that's how I remember it.

A lot of people spell it "alot", but they're (not "there" or "their") wrong. Too (not "to" or "two") many people make the same mistake.

So, voila (not "walla"), you have your (not "you're") answer.
