I don't know if I was seeing things, but I could have sworn that several years ago on t.v., I saw a major league pitcher throwing several pitches to the batter that intentionally bounced on the ground and then into the strike zone. He threw a couple in a row. Is it even legal? Was I dreaming?

You can not bounce a pitch for a strike. The only way it would be a strike is if the batter swings and misses. Pitchers do not bounce pitches in the dirt to throw strikes on purpose but they do throw balls in the dirt(usually breaking balls) in order to get the batter to swing at a pitch out of the zone. They do this sometime when they are ahead in the count.

Geez, i think of Mussina's subject has constantly been that he thinks too plenty. My %. of pitcher's i've got seen is Tom Seaver. He became right into a capacity pitcher whilst he became into youthful, yet after one 10-10 3 hundred and sixty 5 days, he found out he could no longer blow human beings away anymore and grew to alter into extra of a finese pitcher and pitched many extra years or maybe have been given a no-hitter. saved his fastball for whilst he necessary it and saved batters guessing whilst that must be. After that, in line with threat Jim Palmer. a guy who is going his total profession without giving up a single grand slam has rather have been given his thinking cap on.

You can't bounce a ball for a strike. Pitchers do throw curveballs, splitters, etc. in the dirt to try to get a batter to chase it though.

It's legal, but they won't be called strikes unless the batter takes a swing at them. That's the whole point - to get the batter to swing over the ball and get himself out. That's why, when it's done intentionally, it's almost always done with a 2-strike count.

it is too risky to bounce a pitch because the ball can get away
