Private colleges are not usually much different to get into than public ones; the only difference is the cost. However, depending on your family's financial status, there are many forms of financial aid available to help with that.

Actually, a private college may be a very good choice for someone in your circumstances. Because most of them are a little smaller than many public schools, there is more personal attention, and you can get a better explanation of how to get through than you might at a public school.

You should probably talk with a guidance counselor at your high school about some options. You might want to think about what you want to study (if you have any idea; if you don't, you are not alone), where in the country you might want to go (don't forget that while moving away gives you independence, you then need to think about how you would get home for holidays), whether you are interested in religious-based universities or only secular ones, whether you think you will need to have a well-paid job while in school (big cities might be better for that than small towns), and what kind of campus life you are interested in - liberal or conservative, artsy or techy, party school or compulsive studying, etc. If you want, you can email me about this. I'm a university professor/administrator, have attended four different schools as a student (and worked at six others), so while I can't always give you the perspective of a current student, I can give you a sense of what some of the options are (rather than just saying, "this is where I go and it's a great school").

Same as you get into any other college - send in the application, recommendations, transcripts, test results, and application fee. All the info is on the websites of the colleges.

But there are thousands of them out there - you might want to think about narrowing down what you're interested in and what you're looking for in a college, and go from there.

I just want to say congrats on being first generation. Technically I was first generation on my mother's side, but my dad's side of the family is flooding with doctors, engineers, lawyers and psychologists. My cousin, on the other hand, was truly first generation. Too bad for him I graduated before and became the first one in that side of the family to have a college degree.

What are you interested in? That is key when your going to college. Look out for college fairs where you go to look at what the colleges offer. My sister wants to go to college for music and she went to a fair and found several colleges that offered what she wanted. Search google for colleges with programs that your interested in. Hope that helps! :)

Depends on the college...for the more prestigious ones, its good grades and lots of $......hmmmm, why is this a perplexing issue?

You apply just like any other college.

start planning way ahead, apply for scholarships, and pick schools you have a realistic chance of getting into *and* being happy at.
