212 is the boiling point of water at sea level (in degrees Fahrenheit).

If you are considerably above sea level (for example, in Denver, Colorado), water will boil at a lower temperature. (This means things will take longer to cook, because the water doesn't get quite as hot.)

98.6 is supposed to be the average human body temperature. (The real average is slightly lower. The number 98.6 was arrived at by converting 37 degrees Celsius (which was actually rounded up slightly from the real value) directly to Fahrenheit.)
