Several countries - Austrailia, Brittian, Canada, etc. all had huge gun bans after mass murder shootings. All of the bans caused violent crime to rise exponentially and stay that way? Seriously, I really want to know what the logic is behind this. Are the facts and figures wrong? If anyone can show them to me I waould appreciate it.

It is human nature to try to find something to blame with something so horribly insane happens. You're correct in being suspect of these knee-jerk reactions. How crazy are we to think that a law banning guns will stop criminals!!!! Today's 4/18/07 Wall Street Journal has an editorial piece that provides facts and statistics on how legal, trained gun ownership among lawful people has saved lives and how creating "gun free zones" has made things worse in practice.

I can't speak for Australia and Britian, but I know.. it's really not THAT hard to get a gun in Canada. I hear American media all the time saying how we "ban" guns... but fact is we got about 7 million gun owners in this country in about as many families... so we actually do have guns. We just don't have a constitution that recognizes our right to own them. You also have to be registered, and must have a clean criminal record... not too different than in the States actually.

As for violent crime.. I dunno where you get your figures from. The United States has more violent crimes than all of the said countries combined. You may say "we about twice the population as the said countries combined"... but even if you added up all the homocides in Britian, Canada, and Australia and multiplied them by 3, it still would not equal the yearly homicide number in the United States. If owning guns equalled saftey, America would be the safest country in the world. Fact is, it's not.

I'm not bashing America either by this. I'm just saying in the words of Dennis Miller "let's not make it impossible to own a gun.. but at least make it as easy to own a gun as to get a pilot liscence".

First of all, I don't know where you get your information.,.. but that is not true.

I have lived in two of those countries and neither one, ever came close, even close.. to having the incidents involving killing with guns that the U.S. has. ) and I will get back to you with the actual figures)

Yes, guns can be obtained illegally if wanted.. but look at the case of this kid in VT... he perhaps would not have carried out this crime had it not been so very easy to get those weapons.. who knows.. maybe he would have had a clear moment and realized it was wrong.

Just think, being immunized against measles does not mean that maybe, just maybe you might contract a different strain in your lifetime.. but having been protected.. you have a better than 70% chance of never getting the disease... isn't' that pretty good odds? Why are Americans so stupid about this.. thinking ever body has to have a weapon? I do not understand it.

How do you know that did you learn it from the gun lobby and you are acting like no-one in Australia has a gun we just are a little more careful who actually can buy one and there is no way a man locked up in a mental hospital would ever get a permit
If you wish to have that right in your country that's your choice but we put our safety in our police and the people that hand out gun permits who have very strict guidelines to go by.

The number of shootings in the USA far exceed the number in the countries you mention. A ban on weapons is not an encouragement to use them The USA is the only country in the world that has to have armed guards in its schools to prevent the students from shooting each other.

They want us to become as socialized as they are....they need our guns first. Any excuse will do.

er... can you cite that... they have lower rates than we do, last time I checked...

if it raised "exponentially" they should be much higher than ours...

basically... what are your facts and figures supporting what you say?
