All it does is send a little message to the person saying they've been poked. And then they can 'poke' back if they want.
I think the general purpose of this, at least in the beginning, was to kind of say hi to friends that you haven't added yet, let them know your on facebook and that you should become friends on facebook as well. Nowadays, its used for anything. It's just a little thing fun that facebook decided to have on their website. It doesn't affect anything else on the site.

When I first got into the pokes, there was a "program" that had a list of exercises to do. For each poke, you had to add one to your routine, i.e. pushup, situp, etc. Or you could add your own. I did not do the calesthentics but added my walking to it. For every poke, I had to do an extra ten steps to my 3 mile walk. Helped a lot and it was fun to see just how many I would have to do that day. Does anyone else remember this???

I've read the answers provided by some of the face bookers, and I still don't really know what a poke might be. I suppose my answer to what a poke is, if some body actually takes a poke at me, he or she had better be ready to know that they are in a real slug fest.

Between same sex most times just means hey what's up...
Poking someone of the pposite sex is flirting like throwing the ball into their court and then if they respond then there interested
I've seen a lot of people seem to think that it can be flirting, so looking for everyone's opinion...if my guy is continuously (multiple times in the week or even multiple times in a day is poking girls 3 of the same girls and has poked me once total how would you take that?? Even after me asking him not to do that and told him its being flirtatious and disrespectful to me...

It means nothing. I've recently been poked twice by a 'friend' whom I actually don't like. The first time I got rid of the poke. Yesterday she poked me again and I will ignore it for maybe two days, then block and unfriend her. Been wanting to do that for some time anyway. She's just doing it to annoy me.

1.A “poke” is basically someone trying to get your attentionIt’s one of the meaningless features that are used just to annoy someone.
2.If you poke someone not in your network and they poke back. You can view their profile even if your not their friend!
3.A poke is when you allow someone to see your facebook page for 3 days, so they can know who you are and hopefully add you as a friend.

All that happens is they get a little message saying "you have been poked by so-and-so" and they have the option to poke you back. That's about it. No real meaning, just something to pass the time and/or bother people with.

It's like in a physical situation where you hold up your hand, pointing one forefinger at someone, one eye squinting and saying softly to yourself: "that girl (guy) there..."
