The only way you can upgrade is if you have a slot in your Motherboard for a video card, PCIe or AGP one or the other, if you dont have a slot your out of luck, if you do just get a Video Card that has the same slot as your mobo.

Once you put in a Video Card you can disable the onboard chip in your BIOS

Good Luck

Your 5 year old Dell computer would most likely have an AGP slot plus two or more PCI slots.

Forget PCI graphics card. They are outdated, slow, hard to find and expensive if you find a brand new one.

Upgrade to an AGP card that your Dell's power supply could handle. The ATI 9550 or the 9600 Pro are cheap but good cards and consume less than 20 watts.

Absolutely! This is a fairly common upgrade. The first is to determine which available slots you have, and which video you want. You may need to open you computer to determine this. The next step is to check the system bios. The system bios should contain an option to disable the integrated video card. If the option does not exist, determine the manufacturer of your computer, as well as the manufacturer of your bios. Contact each respective company for upgrades.

Some more information on your computer would be nice like the make and model. Some box (computer) makers make it difficult to upgrade forcing you to buy a new box.

Some do have PCI or AGP slots so you can add on later.

If it is intergrated video, it is part of the motherboard and cannot be removed. Your best best like you said is to use your existing equipment to upgrade but know what your computer is would help greatly.

Yes you might have to change a setting in the bios menu under video to pci. when your computer restarts you hit f1 or f10 to enter bios settings.
