I would suggest quite a bit more food for your betta. I feed mine a bit of flake or a few pellets each morning and a little bit of frozen or live food each evening. In the evenings I feed brine shrimp or blood worms, or daphnia or mosquito larvae or maggots ... things like that.

See, such a mixed bag of answers and now you're probably completely confused. Your routine is fine as long as you follow it. Fish in the wild have to look for their own food so sometimes they go hungry for a day or two. Your guy gets those 4 precious pellets every other day so he's doing pretty well (although I'd probably do 2 pellets in the morning and 2 pellets at night just so he doesn't have 4 pellets sitting in his gut all at the same time). Just keep and eye on him because eating only dry food often makes them a little constipated (then just smush up a green pea (take off the semi-hard skin covering the pea) and give it to him). He'd probably enjoy an occasional treat of live food or frozen worms (a good tropical fish store often has a freezer section with frozen fish foods) if you can find some daphnia or blackworms or brine shrimp, scuds, snails (well, mine eat snails). I feed my fish daily just because I can't keep track of what day I'm on if I don't do it every day--but I feed them only a little each day. Don't overfed, not only will it pollute your tank but he'll be pooping out more ammonia, and even fish will develop fat deposits which will shorten his life.

Actually this is the perfect and ideal diet. Most owners will recommend feeding bettas 3 pellets ever 3 days but 2 every other day is also a good idea. Remember that bettas have a slow metabolism and dont need a lot of food

That's one of the best foods to feed a betta. And 4 pellets every other day isn't bad. Fish usually have slow metabolisms, and they can usually got up to 2 weeks without you feeding them in an established tank. But I'm guessing he's not in anything more than 2 gallons, so that would be pretty cruel.
You're not going to starve him with going every other day like you do. It could actually be better to feed him every other day if you don't have any form of filtration on his tank. Over-feeding is the quickest and most common way people kill their fish. All of their waste creates a bad habitat through ammonia. Unless you do daily water changes in his small tank, I wouldn't feed him more than you already do.

You can actually go 2-3 days between feedings. If you have a significantaly large bowl then your feeding is appropriate. But instead of just giving four pellets simply give him a pellet at a time, until they begin to drop to the bottom before getting eaten. They dont get fed often not because of their need for food but because of how much it dirties the water. Do a water change once a week for a small bowl, and a week and a half for a large one. If it is in a small aquarium then you only need to change half the water once a month.

It's not good to starve your fish. Bettas should be fed everyday with a few pellets or as much as they can eat within a few minutes and the rest taken out. If you don't feed it every day it's the same as feeding you once one day and then just letting you starve for a few days before giving you food again. In a captive environment it can't find its own food so it depends on you.
Look after it properly.

Fish are supposed to eat every day. You are supposed to feed a betta three or four pellets every day. I don't think your betta will grow that much because it is not getting enough food to eat.

It may survive on that diet, but 2 small feedings per day would be better.

You should feed them once per day and only as much as they can consume within two minutes.

yes. That's about right because if you over feed them they can die.
