If they put a liquid in, it would probably show pretty quickly. If its a solid, like sugar or something, it depends if the solid dissolves in the gas or not. If it dissolves into a solution in the gas, it will make its way into the engine pretty quickly. If it doesn't dissolve, it would have to get shakin up, so the particles would get sucked into the lines, which will start to clog the fuel filter. This wont be as noticeable as quick, but it will prevent the engine from getting as much gas, so you will notice a lack of power.
