Life is short, because we have wasted half the life span in sleep alone. The other, in the pursuit of education, and whatnot training that made us face the world with confidence. The rest will be history, seeing us work to the bones, trying to make a mark in society. Not to mention, the above commitment will render an earlier death than expected, due to sickness etc. The meaning of life is short, entirely to stress, overindulgence, and worrying that abound our lives.

Compared to the time Earth has been around, our lives are really short.

It's more of a motivational thing. If you think it's going to end, then you want to do more with it.

However, it is the longest thing. You are right.

One last point: It's the longest thing we do but compared to all the other things going on in the world, does it ever make a difference?

At my age life seems short. I will be 60 this year and I can clearly remember, as if it were yesterday, the end of the Korean war. I remember most of my teachers in grade school. Some of my old friends and I talk about it like it happened yesterday. It is not that long. Then I look in the paper and/or get a phone call that one of them has died. Life is short. Enjoy.

Ha! I like your attitude, Asker!

I think the reason so many people say life is short is that, as others point out, it seems hard to get everything done. It is so easy to fantasise about extending one's life with new technology in the future. People realise that life could be a lot longer if only we had the power to lengthen it.

Indeed, we have already improved peoples' lifespans in many countries simply by improving the availability of medicines and good nutrition. (And we have shortened it by fast food! hehe)

What will people say about life in the future? Will one hundred and fifty years be too short?

Life is short when you found that there were a lot of things you have done/try, but age is catching up. It's long when you don't know what you are supposed to do in life.
