Well, I'm not a very good liar, and as far as excuses go, my friends usually come to me only in the most desperate last hope scenarios, but here goes...
I would say that you have contracted the 24 hour Ebola virus. Yeah, that's it. I'll also mention that you'll be back as soon as you're feeling better.

My dog got into it with a skunk, and I have to bathe him in tomato juice or I can't let him in the house. Of course, I can't leave him out until I get home, because it's against the block committee policy.

Are you sure you don't want to go to work? I would go to work, even if it is frustrating sometimes. Just do it, otherwise you would feel guilty. Unless, you had a valuable reason or very urgent emergency then the situation is different.

I can't come into work today because of eye trouble.... I can't see working today.
my roommates horse overate and he has been walking it since midnight, I need to walk the horse so it doesn't lay down and die.
I am sorry but I will be unable to come in to work today. My agoraphobia (fear of leaving the house) is kicking in and I am afraid to drive today.
