Hair spray (or hair lacquer) is a common household aqueous solution that is used to keep hair stiff or in a certain style. Weaker than hair gel, hair wax, or glue, it is sprayed using a pump or aerosol spray nozzle.

Hairspray was first invented and marketed in 1955 by the hair products company Helene Curtis, based in Chicago, Illinois, under the trademark Spray Net.

Its active ingredient is a suitable polymer; e.g. the chemical elastesse, a form of liquid elastic that keeps the hair stiff and firm without snapping it and pytocalcious which lowers the amount of minerals in the hair root causing the hair to become stiff, or polyvinylpyrrolidone. Most hair sprays are scented.

Sorry, did not find the other part of your question.

The question piqued my curiosity, but I couldn't find an answer for you on the 'net.

I'm guessing it was invented in the 1950's or 60's. It was heavily used in the 60's for sure. Was the bee hive hair style 50's or 60's? They used a lot of hairspray on that monster.

Before that people wore short hair bobs that were easily managable. Before that they wore long hair pulled up - again, easily managable. Before that wigs & white powder, or ribbons, bows, beads & picks in their hair if they were rich and if they weren't they didn't do much besides comb/brush or pull it up.

Fancy hairstyles to require hairspray for 'regular folks' is a modern idea.

When Was Hair Spray Invented

Before hairspray, we used a diluted form of mucilage, which is plain old glue. It was mixed with water so it was thin enough to be combed through, but not too thick so it would make your hair stiff and hard to comb. Modern day gels have the same affect. best wishes

I dont think thats good for your eyes. Just like the others said. Just get a waterproof mascara. You could use the hairspray on a mascara brush for your brows though

Pomade, i.e. grease. Macassar oil (whatever that is) was popular, leading to the invention of those little cloths they put on chair backs to protect the fabric from the grease, and their name - antimacassars. Similar things are still used on airline seats.

Pomade (a wax/oil) was used, but must find out when hairspray was invented.
