I found it in northwest Minnesota, in a dirt hill where they're building new homes, it looks like quartz or crystal or something... it's about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide, roundish, and they're spikey crystaly things jutting out of it, some of these chucks that spike out are tiny and some are about an inch long. the color is a goldish, tan. Any ideaS?

The area may have been under water for a long period of time in the past, and the crystals of whatever material they are must have formed then.

I have found similar rocks here in Colorado some as large as 24" x 24" in streams that have similar crystal formations covering the entire surface of the base stone.....

Try to locate a local rock shop or hobby shop that handles rock hobby supplies to see if they can help you identify what you found.

From the description I'd say calcite. Try scratching it with a knife blade or nail... if it scratches it is NOT quartz, if it does I'm thinking calcite or fluorite...
