1. Geographic isolation can bring on speciation. Members of a population are separated by a lava flow, migration to an island, earthquake, mountain range, ... so they don't share changes any more and differences accumulate.

2. Reproductive isolation can bring on speciation. Members of a population are separated by differences in mating songs, courtship behaviors or displays, mating season, .... so they don't interbreed and share changes any more.

Don't forget, peripatric ( mostly geographic ) and parapatric ( somewhat geographic ).
