"The term Watergate scandal refers to a 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. by members of the Richard Nixon administration and the resulting cover-up which led to the resignation of the President."

The details can be found in G. Gordon Liddy's autobiography "Will".

Basically the Committee to Re Elect the President (oddly enough self-named C.R.E.E.P.) broke into the Watergate Hotel to steal information on Democratic rivals that didn't stand a chance anyway.

They picked the lock on the outer door, and taped the latch and went in. When they returned to the door, they found the tape missing, as a security guard had found it and removed it. Being the geniuses they were, they re-taped the door for the second trip. The security guard, being the genius he was, called it in when he found the tape a second time. They got caught.

Nixon's role was to try to cover it up, although it was never established that he had any prior knowledge.

Gordon Liddy's response to the Senate subcommittee investigating the affair was classic. When asked if he swore to tell the truth, he simply replied "No" and served time for Contempt of Congress.
