The reason they are called suicide doors is that they were the only ones made at the time that you could open while driving (opening backwards so the wind dose not hold them shut while driving)and it was poss able to exit the vehicle weather by accident or intent while the vehicle was going down the road.

With a standard door, if the door were to open it would be pushed back closed by the force of the wind acting upon it. This also prevents passengers from falling out of the vehicle when in motion. With suicide doors, if the door were to come open when the vehicle is in motion, the door would be ripped open and if a passenger were to fall out at this time, they would be in a sence dragged with the vehicle, hence suicide.

Because the doors open the opposite of the normal doors, someone exiting the vehicle could get crushed (between the door and door frame) if another vehicle approaching from the rear smashes into the door.

not that it happens often but the door opens from the front if you were to be getting out and a car hit you door you would be cut in half is one theory next back on the gangster days if you were attacking a car the had door that opened from the front you would bee cut down sooner due to the suprise that the car door would cover you from shooter from the rear

When you open up the back doors, they open to oncoming traffic with the hinges being closest to the trunk.
