I cant stomach the radio today. I think after 9/11 and after Bush got in, everything went down the toilet and there's no good artists anymore. I mean there's this poppy crap that promotes materialism, and then there's gangster rap where you have to be a gangster and also materialistic and those white kids who try to be black just make it worse. I listened to music from 10 years ago and it rocked. There was grunge and alt rock and the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s were the best. what happened? why is everyone selling out? is iit just me or is music getting worse. are we in need of another musical revolution/ another genius? it's your opinion, and best and most detailed answer gets best answer. there also has to be a good reason as well.

Also, i think punk is dead, it was replaced by emos and whiny pop singers who complain about everything, and rock sounds the same. well thats also why i think its getting worse as well.

What does materialism have to do with music, and why is everyone multi-tasking? (acting, clothing and perfume lines, etc.)

omfg thts so true. Im only 14 and ive pretty much grown up [well growing up] with this crap and i still dont like it. all pop music sounds the same. all it is some high-pitched girl whining about some ungodly thing or another. or the ever famous 'my boyfriend sucks' song. Kelly Clarkson is famous for those *gags*

and rap. ahahahaha. you mean crap? its all "mah ni66a" this or "mah money" that. and not to mention all the half naked women in the videos. My step brothers are into that garbage and i cant even tell one song from another that they listen to. and they hang out with a few kids who are probably the whitest things on earth but they wear the baggy clothes and listen to that crap and wear du-rags and all that crap trying to be 'gangster." it actually makes me laugh sometimes.

What happened? Music artists are becoming more interested in money as opposed to making music. A lot of them dont care if their music is good or not, just as long as they're getting paid by whoever the record producer was who gave them a contract. Its very sad how much more of the world revolves around money then what used to. a lot used to be because people wanted to do things, not just cause they get paid to do them. well thats just my opinion =]

Why is everyone selling out? Cause thats what the record producers say they should do. And hey they dont care they get paid.

is it just you that thinks the music sucks? No.

Do we need another music revolution? yes definetly.

oh yeah and i agree with xavier w in a sense. I love the music that comes from the uk. like the fratellis and such. the music is so much better there.

I definitely agree with you. I love listening to the Beatles (mostly later music, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, any style of music thats is not in any way associated with pop, hip hop, newer rock, or most of all, rap. Music now seems to be turning into, "Lets see who can write the worst songs and still sell millions of albums!!!" I never listen to the radio, I dont watch VH1 or MTV (at my friend's houses, i dont have cable) because you hear the same crappy songs over and over, until you want to smash the TV. The reason I hate rap the most (there were a few good rap songs i must admit, but those were the first rap songs, not this new crap) because they sing about how they did drugs and hit their girlfriend, then shot some people because they thought they were ugly, then whine about racism. It bothers the crap out of me! The Beatles, however wrote songs that for the most part were about nothing, but that doesn't matter, because they had talent, and knew how to write songs so well, they didn't need to make sense. Take Norwegian Wood, its about nothing and uses a sitar (dont ask if you dont know). It was still a great song. I would much rather listen to Eleanor Rigby for a week straight than any modern song once. And no, Eleanor Rigby is not some singer you have never heard of, it is a song that has only a string choir. No bass, guitar, or drums. Most music seems to be one guitar, one bass, one drummer, and a singer. I think it is interesting when there is a strings section (violins, cellos, violas, for the less musically inclined people), or they have a brass band. Its much more interesting, as it is different.
The modern music I do find interesting is most often out of the US, instead coming from Britain. For example Badly Drawn Boy. It is Alternative Rock, and is interesting. He does use other intruments in some songs, such as strings, or wood winds (saxophones in Bewliderbeast). One song starts with a cello and french horn solo, which come in several times during the song. It is a great song.

I have to say I partially disagree... I wouldn't say 9/11 way the turning point, but rather the death of Kurt Cobain. Nirvana was the last good band aournd... Well, I suppose there were others, but nothing quite as good. The late 90s was when music got crappy and stuff like the Spice Girls and N*Sync got popular. However, AC/DC is still an active group, and there are some others, but nothing's been released recently that's been popular that shows any true talent except for Radiohead..... As for the radio, there's pretty much nothing good on it.
I think we need a music revolution, but I don't see anything coming that can change anything...

This website has every number 1 song of the year from 1960 to 1969, as well as other popular songs from each year. It gives an indication of the type of songs that were hits then. Music was so much better back then.
In my opinion, music today all sounds alike. But the 1960s and 70s had a good mix of musical styles.
Here is the site-

I don't think it's necessarily that music is getting worse, but I do agree that you must look a lot harder to find good music. Also I think that perhaps some music is more appreciated over time, chances are that you probably thought similarly of the alternative and grunge rock back then as you do of the gangsta rap and pop music now. Btw, there was no alt or grunge in the 60s-70s :)

Yes, Justinkay, the fact of the matter is that rap music has infiltrated our system and ruined music for good. Popular music these days consists of emo or rap music. Both suck. Emo is lame, and Fall Out Boy are the WORST BAND ON THE PLANET. Rap isn’t music, it’s talking with rhythm. Most of the lyrics are stupid and incomprehensible. Remember when music used to be good? Like classic rock and music that actually made sense? I mean, there are of course good bands out there still, but we live in a generation of bad music. When you have a song like “This is Why I’m Hot” as one of the most popular songs, you know that society has reached terribleness in music. Music used to be good. Justinkay, you are right 100 and 10 percent: Music has gotten worse, and unfortunately, it seems like it is going to stay that way.

Take my advice. F**k the radio. Keep listening to your old records and albums. Dig deeper into music( Especially underground... there's some good artists out there) because a lot of that mainstream sucks. Its over-rated The major record labels are in cahoots with the radio. Damn the radio to hell! Well that's all I got. Just trying to help. If you don't like hip-hop, I have got a couple of artists that would change your mind.

Mate i completely disagree, the music scene in England (where i am from) is massive right now. Quaility indie music acts - Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight, The Zutons, Jamie T, Kooks, Bloc Party, Dirty Pretty Things, The Fratellis, Klaxons, etc

And bands like Oasis are still going, also from a few years ago The Libertines. Also The Killers from the US are great!

If you haven't heard of these look them up they are brilliant, I particuarly recomend - The Zutons, Jamie T, Bloc Party, The Fratellis and The LIbertines!

Yes! I am also in the same age group and have been thinking the same thing. There was a time when I could watch Daisy Fuentes do the MTV video countdown on the weekends and know and want to know almost every song on the list. Now, with the exception of the occassional entertaining music video (OK Go is great) I can't stand to listen to about 90% of the crap they are playing.

YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!! Music today sucks, of coarse there is a hand full of artists that arn't half bad, but seriously I listened to the radio today and they all made me want to shove something in my ears. No one has anything to sing about besides sex, gansters or they have a few lines of original lyrics and then they just repeat the chorus over and over. And i have enough drama at school already, i don't need to be hearing about how some ***** stole your boyfriend and so on!!

So my advice is stick to the old stuff and wait for the world to grab a brain or eardrum.
