Question about the movie "The Killers" (1946) with Ava Gardner?

In the movie, Ava Gardner is at a party and asks for a Ginger Ale straight up. When the host brings it over, her mood has changed, so she asks him to "sweeten it". What does that imply was added to the Ginger Ale? I assume it was booze, but what?
