Here's some special recipe to speed up your computer:

1.Remove Unnecessary Software.
You may have a bunch of software packages on your hard drive that are no longer needed, or they were gratuitously installed when you downloaded some other package. Toolbars, file-sharing programs, free email enhancers, online shopping "companions" and download managers are notorious for this practice. These uninvited guests can put a big drag on your startup time, cause web pages to load slowly, and generally slow down your computer.

2.Clean Your Registry
Registry Cleaner can cleans your system registry of unnecessary entries that are created when you install or remove programs on your computer. An "orphaned" registry entry can confuse Windows and cause a delay. Slimming down your registry will make Windows run faster. Sometimes it can speed up your computer up to 300%.Top 5 Regsitry cleaners can be found on this page:

3.Clean out spyware and Malware
Spyware and malware can slow down your system a lot, because they use your resources to generate popup ads, send spam, and often interfere with the operation of good programs.

4.Stop Programs from starting on Windows boot
To prevent programs from launching themselves at start-up.Click Start-Run-Msconfig-Startup,then uncheck unused programs.

5.Clean history and temp files.
Deleting temporary and unnecessary files from your hard drive can improve your computer's performance.

Good Luck!

if it is a Dell, than go to dell's website and look up the specifics on it. it should tell you there what the upgrade capabilities are of the pc. there usually isn't much you can do about the processor, the ram will be limited by the motherboard (see dell's website for this), but the hard drive should be able to be upgraded no matter what. if it is from 1998, then it is probably time to get a new computer. they are cheap enough nowadays where you could get something 100 times better than what your brother has for i'm guessing around 500 bucks.

good luck

It isn't his cpu that needs speeding up. Programmes depend on memory. If he doesn't want to upgrade his computer, he needs more memory. Depending on the operating system he is running, you need to at least triple that memory for Windows 98, and quadruple it if he has put Windows XP in it. Personally, I would suggest a 9 year old computer should be relegated to back-up status.

You cannot simply make a cpu faster because clock speed is set. What you can do is get rid of processes which slows down your brother's computer. Also de-fragmentation helps to increase speed slightly.

Try upgrading the memory. I upgraded my fathers by first going to crucial.com and running a scan. After I found out what the max memory and type of memory his computer could hold that's what I put into it. This drastically improved the speed and was relatively cheep as I bought the memory off eBay.

Put more ram into the pc if its capable of handling it. If not, he probably should look at replacing the cpu.

1. you can put a bigger ram drive if that old box can take it

2. you can put a larger hard drive in so if it runs out of ram it can put data elsewhere.

3. just buy a new computer

number 3 would work best
