It's not unusual for a betta to seek out some shelter every once in a while. Turn his light off a little early and give him a rest. If he stops eating for a day it would be more of a concern.

Betta's are very odd fish. They hide for no apparent reason. Mine plays dead most of the time. =/
but they like to explore.

i dont believe so..i used to work at a pet store ..and they are ofter lazy fish and like to rest on more that just the gravel..or like to be secluded ...though some starve for attention..and the only thing that he should do that you might wonder about would be bubbles at the top..THOUGH it is nothing to worry about..thats actually a bubble nest for eggs..anywho id check him for any spots of infection..

No its fine. They like it. If he is swimming around, eating, flaring and then hiding for a while, I guess its fine. They like to to do that when they wanna rest.

I don't think it's sick. It's probably just a little scared. maybe something is bothering it.
