It's called that cos 'earth' is a feminine noun, you can present it as a metaphor, you shouldn't get any arguments.

Mother Earth is a metaphor for the feminine principle or the female aspect of God. There is a feminine element since everything has a duality including that which is the energy source of all life. Unfortunately christianity has been largely successful in suppressing the feminine component of the deity many know as God.

mother earth is a find metaphor. The mother is the giver of life, we are (in an anthropological sense) born in her ocean, and live only by her bounty as would a child so, yes, "Mother Earth" is a fine metaphor.

Of Course,
Many worship the earth however it is better to worship the creator of the earth and not the creation it's self.
(Isa 40:28) Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, [that] the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? [there is] no searching of his understanding.
So Satan that Old angel fallen from heaven and the grace of God Almighty Even worships God as well only not as much but he still has to to some degree.
(Rom 1:25) Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Technically, Yes. it isn't the best usage of a metaphor...but if you said something like...

Rebecca is the most genuine, compassionate person. She is mother earth, a nurturer to those who are in need.
etc. etc.

(i noe that wasn't a very good one, but i hoped it is understood...)

hope this helped. :)
