I might be completely missing the point here but you seem to think Britain is like a city or something. " I have played on Google earth enough to know that Great Britain isn't that big compared to the U.S. so I don't mind traveling a bit to get hair done, buy clothes, etc, but as long as the above is easy to do I would be happy" It's much bigger than you think it is. We don't all have a communal hair dressers and we don't all drink from the same well. Basically, England (I'm leaving Scotland, Wales and Ireland out since I'm not 100% sure about them) is divided up into counties, which are subsequently divided up into cities and towns. Your best bet would be one of the small country villages dotted about. It's green and pleasant as far as the eye can see, but you don't ever need to drive any longer than half an hour to find the city centre. Towns such as these are usually laid out with a town hall and church in the middle, houses slotted around and a manor or two behind closed gates. A considerable amount of these are open to the public and there's no place better than an English garden. As far as I'm aware, there's only one place in Britain where you're completely cut off, which is a pub residing at the top of a mountain in Scotland. Last time it snowed people were stuck there for days. Bolton Abbey seems like a logical choice for you (The town, not the monastery. Don't become a nun)

York and Blackpool, from one extreme to another. York is steeped in history and Blackpool is such a loud, fun place. I don't live in either, just like to visit when I can
