There's actually evidence that doing a lot of crunches will give you incontinence later in life by weakening your pelvic muscles. Pilates and other "core" movements are TOTALLY the way to go for tight abs. There's a great book by Brooke Siler called The Pilates Body that has easy instructions on getting started with pilates at home (it's in most libraries, or it's like $15 at any bookstore).
Two movements that are really good for your abs are the hundred and the plank - there's a link to how to do them below. The pilates side kick series is much better than plain leg lifts - instructions for that are below, too.
If you do pilates 5 days a week, you'll see results in about a month. A little cardio doesn't hurt, too, to burn off the fat that's covering your muscles (just walking more is fine). Don't hurt yourself, though, and don't try to do more reps than the sites/books recommend - pilates doesn't work like that. 8-10 reps is more than enough if you're doing it right.

ok here is how to do it..
before breakfast, do 2 sets of 30 sit ups along with 2 sets of 30 torso twists (optional..). in the afternoon, do 3 sets of 30 sit ups. and at night after dinner, do 3 sets of 30 sit ups. you will see results VERY VERY quickly!! after 2 weeks, it wont really do anything but it does a lot before that! but dont start out by doing that many sit ups because your stomach will KILL and you wont be able to do any at all for a few days because of the pain. maybe start with 1 set of 30 at the same times and work your way up.

I think that if you aren't already getting good results to try more leg lifts and/or crunches. Do more as you see better results.

If you work up to a 100 and add leg lifts " hands under butt" and situps "legs bent sit on pillow" some pushups "knee kind would be good " squats for butt
you 'll tone and dump fat.. you'll amaze yourself..

crunches and situps work your upper abs.
try holding a pushup position but with your elbows on the ground. (it works your core)
running and other cardio burn off fat so you can see your abs.
the leg lifts will tone your lower abs.

Lower your total body fat percentage. It is the only way you will show your abs. Period. Nothing else will do it. Less body fat = greater definition. Less calories consumed more calorie burnt. It is that simple. Eat less, excercise more.
