These camps were for exterminating people, usually it means Jews during World War II. Gypsies, trade union leaders and gays were also exterminated. They were killed. Sometimes they would work under terrible conditions, but the purpose of the camp was to kill as many people as possible, and in total they killed millions.

People who were perceived as inferior or enemies of Germany were killed. These included Jews, Catholics, Romanian gypsies, and others.
The fellow who said the Red Cross never reported anything is very funny. He should ask the American troops who were the first to enter the camps. Ask them what went on at extermination camps.

What did they do? They murdered people, mainly Jews, Homosexuals, Gypsies, or any other people that posed a threat to the Nazi Socialst Party. In the early parts of the German exterminiation plan, they used guns and ammo and old fashion ways to killing people. As time went on the Nazis ultimately discovered that this wa a waste and began experimenting with gas. This led to the use of gas chambers to kill "unfit" people.

The red cross never reported that anybody was exterminated. If you look at the world almanacs from that period you will find that the jewish numbers didn't decrease. If you really want to find out what happen during that time read the speech from Benjamin H. Freeman circa 1961.
p.s. He was a jew.

They gassed people to death and burned the bodies and made it into soap.
They even tanned the hides of some bodies and made the skins into lampshades.
Some people were experimented on so that doctors would know how long it took to freeze to death or other horrible deaths.

force people into slave labor, take their belongings from them, including bodily posessions like hair, torture them, starve them, do human experiments on them, and ultimately, the goal was to kill them in the end.
