I'm a little more than 3/16th native american. Is that enough to consider myself native american?

Yes. As long as you're accepted by a native american group as a member, then you are. No % of blood will change that.

Any amount of American Indian blood is enough for you to consider yourself Native American. Also, when you fill out the Census Questionaire, you put down what You consider yourself to be, and can put down that you are Native American. As far as any benefits you would have to belong to a State or Federally Recognized Tribal Nation.

It's up to you. Some folks have no blood, but consider themselves "Native American." Some folks are completely non-Native American, but are considered Native American by a tribe: honorary status.

But, if you want to be federally recognized as a legal Native American, you would have to enroll with a tribe, and each tribe has various requirements as to blood quantum, ancestory, etc... There are a few instances of some Natives who are 100% Native American but who are 1/8th this and that, but not enough blood quantum for a particular tribe's enrollment requirements to legally be Native American.

Personally you have to LIVE INDIAN. I've seen full bloods on golf courses named todd that have NO CLUE as to what INDIAN really is.
INDIAN means you know your people, your culture, your language. It means you participate and NOT only on percap day.
You don't CHOOSE to be INDIAN.
If you show up at a powwow dressed in a wanderin bull outfit, the real skins won't even bother with ya.

Now if your talking about getting enrolled with your tribe, it's mass paper work.
Depending on the tribe it can be by quantum or lineage.
But ALL of them want a FAMILY TREE going back to the last REGISTERED full blood.

Are you trying to get a ndn ID? I wouldn't bother do you have any idea what its like to be ndn? It isn't that great. Spending ALL DAY at the free doctor to get medicine that is inferior. Because that is all they are given. Let alone being wards of the government & told how to live. Some tribes require a certain amount in order to get a card.

Grab a ruler that has lines for 16ths of an inch marks. You'd have approximately just over three of those 16th segments...measuring it by how much of an inch you cover can kind of put it in perspective.
