Probably the title of this question makes it seem worse than it is but anyway.... I was thinking about this date I was on with a girl a long time ago. We were at a bar where a band was about to play and so we started talking about music. I was mentioning to her how much I loved music. However when she asked if I played any instruments I answered honestly that I don't. Anyway she was taken aback by this and seemed shocked as if it didn't make sense in her mind. So...I ask the people of this forum, is it really "that" bizarre that someone could really enjoy music but don't play a musical instrument. BTW in case you're wondering she did play music, two or three instruments I think. Just casually, not in a band or anything like that.

i`ve loved music my whole life & music means everything to me...it`s my life!!! & i don`t play any instrument whatsoever...it`s not that i wouldn`t love to learn, i just don`t know if i can!!! but i don`t think it`s that strange...people can enjoy art without knowing how to draw or paint...people can love sports but they don`t necessarily have to participate in them...it`s not so unusual!!!

No you can like music and not play any instruments. That's crazy that someone would be taken aback by that. Its just like how people can enjoy and appreciate works of art and not even know how to draw a straight line.

No, it's not bizarre to like music and not play any instruments. Love of music means that appreciate music, that the music and lyrics move you. I love music - but I don't play any instruments and, believe me, I can't carry a tune! I don't think that makes me - or you - bizarre. I think the girl you dated may have been bizarre - or, at least, a snob!

No not really I LOVE music, mostly rock, but I haven't played an instrument in years, I used too, but I don't find it weird that someone can have a joy of music but not play an instrument, why should anyone find that weird.

No, it seems like she's just ignorant. Just because people are fans of music doesn't mean they have to know how to play an instrument, that goes with sports too.

You don´t have to be a chef to enjoy good food. That way of reasoning is stupid, the fact that you like music has nothing to do with your ability or willingness to play it.
I love music as well, and I don´t know how to play any instrument.

Something is wrong with her response to you. I know lots and lots of people who love music, and who can REALLY sing and can't play an instrument of any kind. JUST LIKE there are people who can't or don't sing can play instruments. I think it's Cher who can barely read music. Don't feel bad...not worth it.

it's not shocking. people like that who play a numerous amount of instruments, being an "EXPERTS" on music, assume that the only reason everyone else like music is because they play an instrument.

i don't think so. sounds like she overreacted and made it seem like she was a great musician who thinks that playing an instrument is a heightened level of music appreciation.

shes probably just a person who feels the need to be better than all others

No it isn't that bizarre for a person to enjoy music but not play anything!

i don't find it shocking at all

i live surrounded and steeped in music -- all kinds -- all the time but i have no real musical ability. i can read music and pluck out simple tunes on the piano or guitar but i don't call that "playing".

don't feel like you are inferior because you aren't a musician -- enjoy the experience of listening.
