I don't condone what he did in any way shape or form but can understand why he did it.

I don't know his reasons. Whatever they were, they led him to intensely violent planning that he carried out. I think he had issues that I lack, or his ability to cope was so messed up that he actually thought this was something worth doing, planned it out for some time, and carried it out. This wasn't 'road rage killing'. I cannot empathize with the senseless slaughter of innocent by-standers, even if they were sh!t-heads or something. He could have looked for a way to escape. If his life had become the trap and this was his only way to escape it, he didn't try hard enough.

I don't know about empathize, but I can understand how a distressed, unbalanced young man living in a gun crazed culture would 'go postal'. Why the surprise? It's happened before & will happen again, especially if the big arms manufacturers start handing out their merchandise hand over fists whilst stuffing their pockets with blood money.

Spritually, Yes. I neither condone, nor accept his actions. I just understand them. There is no book, drug or anything out there to keep us sane.

Physically, No. Murder is murder. Eye for an eye. Tooth for a tooth. I don't believe anybody can be held accountable for his actions, only he can.

I think we all build rocks so big that we can't lift them.
Then, we go nuts trying desperately to lift them up.

Empathizing means I can somewhat offer an understanding of why someone did what they did. I can not understand why any one would kill anyone.

I don't quite understand his motives yet. He sounds like a very lost, angry, depressed individual. He probably should have been in a mental institution. He was very empty inside and apparently felt like others "had it made" and he didn't, which is stupid, because he was attending a brilliant university and could have been very successful in life.

I can see he was frustrated and invisible, and guns make you feel powerfull and the center of attention.
He was properly insane though, don't try to find reason or justification in such a twisted mind.
