There's a few different types of Begonias. Most will act as a Perennial if the climate is warm enough (zone again depends on species). For instance, here in MN no begonias are hardy so I have to dig any tubers and bring in any fiborous roots.

Wax Begonias are very popular and most often treated as a annual.

There is a hardy Begonia, hardy in zones 5-9.

Either way most Begonia are inexpensive, so if a plant does die replacement is not too painful.

I have a begonia plant that I have had for three years, I bring it in for the winter and set it in front of my sliding glass door, it will get straggley looking, and I just pinch it back, each year I manage to get another start from it and now have three pots of it..., will have to divide some of it again this year, however if you leave it outside it will not come back.

Begonias are members of a large family, Begoniaceae. They come from subtropical or tropical climates where they mostly occur as perennial succulent herbs or subshrubs. It is only in cooler climates they act as annuals.
