The are designed so that people who learned to type in a typing class can find the proper position for their index fingers without having to look at the keyboard.

the line is to help typists to type when using the home row keys which are asdf jkl; and the 5 is to help typists use the keypad

good typists do not need to look at the keys while typing so this helps them to type faster

They're so that you can find your "home row" without looking...The one on the 5 key is to let you know where center is on the number pad.
