why can't they just wear ordinary clothes?

The uniforms make them more easy to identify if they escape. It also breaks them down mentally (or is supposed to) to be stripped of their clothes from the outside world. It is also supposed to help reduce gang violence with not having colors hanging out.

Well, when the inmates at the county jail next door used to escape and come over to our campus, it was easier to identify them because they had orange jumpsuits on.

they don't all use jumpsuits. the l. a. County detention center, i trust the biggest detention center contained in the U. S., has the jeans and t-blouse element. some have jumpsuits. that's as a lot because the persons operating them to ascertain. i imagine the brightly-colored jumpsuits are extra commonplace at more beneficial protection centers.

like what? its easier, rather than having a variety to choose from its small , medium, or large, plus its easier to keep an eye on them.
