oh god no! he would do much worse things to the NHL than Bettman could ever dream of. we would have an all Canadian team league, no Europeans what so ever. hes fun to listen too but thats it, i agree with a previous answerer, Scotty Bowman would do a good job.
Cherry would just F#ck things up beyond repair!

Cherry for NHL Commissioner? The guy is full of hot air.
He's just show, I mean who would really wear those outrageous suits and collars?
He would outlaw visors and Europeans as well. And if I had to hear about Terry O'Reilly one more time!

Ken Dryden would, undoubtedly, be the best choice and I don't even like the Habs. He has a hockey background and has been an attorney: I think he would be good at dealing with the "politics" of the league. I disagree with Messier though.

Gretz is a classy guy but isn't terribly successful with the Coyote franchise. He doesn't have a proven track record in management yet.

My pick would be Wayne Gretzky. To me, he is the most logical choice to replace Gary Bettman. He is not only one of the greatest players ever, but also one of the best students of the game ever. He is someone who has great respect for the history and tradition of hockey, and sees great things for its future after witnessing first hand great young players like Crosby and Ovechkin.

He is someone who also respects the wishes of Canadians and won't ignore their suggestions to improve the game the way Gary Bettman has. At the same time, he has also been committed to give the game more exposure in the US. Even many years after his retirement, Gretzky remains arguably the only hockey personality that Americans can relate to and are willing to listen to. For this reason alone, he should be the right choice.

Of course, as a proud Canadian, he might --- although it may be too much to ask --- find a place for Don Cherry in his administration. If I was the next commissioner, I would make Grapes the Vice-President, the same role that Brian Burke and Colin Campbell had. That would make him in charge of all discipline and suspensions. You can bet that much of the violence that often threatens to ruin the game's image would be severely eliminated if Cherry was in charge.

With Cherry and Gretzky in charge of Canada's greatest game and America's adopted sporting sensation, the future of hockey can only be outstanding!

Don Cherry is a celebrity and a media personality. He is not cut out for the Commissioner job. Plus, he has said many things in the past to alienate certain players, and he would never make it to Commissioner with that kind of history.

Anyway, I seriously doubt if he would want it. He just isn't that type.

Oh no. Grapes is not a NHL comissioner type. He would be a set up from Bettman but not the guy you want running the league. If he has his way, he would move all the teams back up to Canada and load them all up with fighters. You next Stanley Cup winner could be the Moosejaw Woodticks.

Don would never go for it. Neither would the owners. I don't think the owners should be the only ones choosing the commish though. I think the players and fans have a stake in the game and a commish is needed who would understand that. I'd go for Ken Dryden or Stevie Y.

No. I love Grapes' old school, hard nosed taste in hockey, but he's racist, anti Euro, anti French Canadian. It can only help the NHL's popularity to play up the diversity and I could just see Grapes trying to "purify" by making it harder to draft non English Canadians.

I find Cherry entertaining but wouldn't want him as commish as he hates anybody that's not Canadian. The league is so much better with the American and European players.

My vote goes for Brett Hull.

Not only would he move all the teams to Canada he would get rid of all the Europeans.

No, Don is good fun to listen to but he doesn't need to be ruining--oops--I mean running hockey.

I think one of the NHL GM's should do it.

Like Brian Burke or Ken Holland.

NO! I've got it!!!

Scotty Bowman!!!!!!!

NO

my first pick would go to Ken Dryden but i don't think he would take that job but out of all hockey people around the world he would be the best pick.

my second pick would go to Mark Messier.
