the space shuttle program (officially known as the space transportation system [STS]) is NASA's idea of a reusable launch vehicle to perform experiments, start and finish the construction of the international space station and other activities such as sending satelites and telescopes into space. the winged shaped orbiter, is one of the two parts of the space shuttle that are re-usable, the other part being the solid rocket boosters which lif the shuttle off the pad and power it through early stages of ascent.
