It used to be either formal or semi-formal,, but that has relaxed a little, unless it is opening night or some other major occasion. A woman would be fine wearing a nice dress and shawl or coat. You might see some blue jeans but that shows a real lack of sophistication. Don't over-do it either, this is not the prom. Men can wear a suit jacket, with or without a tie, but a nice shirt underneath.

It depends on what time of the day.The classic little black dress for the evening show. Something seasonal, but not too casual for matinee. I have seen people in jeans, but going to an opera is special. When you dress up, it makes the event feel special.
Going to an opera is also a good place to net-work sometimes.

If it's opening night or if it is at the MET, wear evening wear. That means a long dress with either a shawl or wrap. If it is at a lesser venue, semi-formal or the nice simple black dress with pearl necklace and earrings is acceptable. Do not wear jeans or pants. It is frowned upon.

You can wear anything you'd like to the opera these days- some people still dress up but many don't. I wouldn't dress sloppily, but otherwise, anything goes. Hope you have a good time!
