So my situation is this...I am in my third year of college but I still have no clue as to what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. I was previously a nursing major but decided that it wasn't for me. People keep telling me not to waste my credits and find a job in the healthcare profession but the more I volunteer I am realizing that I dislike it very much. This has been a real pain for me because my mom and what seems to be everyone else are expressing great disappointment in me. It's gotten to a point where I've just been avoiding people because I know I'll get lectured. I've spoken to several academic counselors and they keep on giving me generic answers, brochures and other crap that doesn't seem to help. I want to hear from real people what helped them choose a career. I've been volunteering as thats really the best that I can do right now but I really haven't found anything that grabs my attention. How did you choose your career? Also any advice is appreciated.

If you don't like nursing, then DON'T do it. You don't know how many nurses I have worked with that don't like nursing but are just doing it because the money is decent and they are just miserable and as a result I was miserable because they made my job that much harder and the patients were miserable because they passed their bad attitude over to them. If you don't like nursing, then maybe you can get into another aspect of the health care profession such as case management or even going around selling products to different hospitals, but if that's still not your cup of tea then why don't you go to your college and take a career assessment test to see what your abilities are best suited for. Maybe you will see something that grabs your attention. And if that doesn't work, why don't you take a break from school and start working in the real world and maybe you will land a job that grabs your attention and interest and will help you decide what you want to do in life. You have to have an interest in something. I'm sure that there must be something that you've thought a little bit about that has grabbed your attention before but have put it in the recesses of your mind. I know that your parents are a little disappointed in you right now because they feel like they have invested a lot of time, energy, and money in you but you need to pick a career that you like so that later on in life you're not miserable. For me, I chose a career in the health field after switching my major two times and it works for me. I wish you the best of luck. Don't get frustrated or give up. You'll find your niche in time.

I know what you mean about counselors... they don't help you make a decision at all..... Second every time some one says something tell them that its your life and you don't want to be stuck in something you don't like.....
third.. What are your hobbies.... like where do you volunteer... maybe nursing was not right because you don't like contact with patients? so maybe a job where you have less patient contact might be good... or do you hate hospital setting because then you might want to change your career directions completely... maybe business..... I mean ordering people around do you feel like a leader can you order people around? maybe a Lawyer.. personally I hated the court when I volunteered there for teen court but I loved the hospital... but if you hate the hospital you might like the court room setting....
anyway good luck........
Edit: p.s maybe try finding a temporary job, maybe you'll like that better because when some one volunteers they don't have the control or any real intake of whats going on around you.

Well if healthcare isn't for you, then don't do anything in that field. And don't feel bad for changing your mind. Better to figure that out now then spend the next year or two finishing your degree, taking the board exams, and then having a RN liscense for a job you don't want.

As far as what do you, I say just try things out. Try taking non-credit classes in various subjects, just you can see what is out there and what you are interested in. I say try and find non-credit classes (try local community colleges) so you don't waste as much money or the credits on classes you don't need or don't like. Try volunteering in other things that have nothing to do with healthcare. Try auditing classes that sound interesting. Join clubs that sound fun. Basically, just try anything and everything that interests you, and eventually you'll find something that you love, that grabs your attention, and most importantly you can see yourself spending your career doing this. Don't approach it as looking for a career, just approach things with the attitude of trying something new that sounds like fun, and just see what happens. But if you think you'll take a while to figure it out, you may want to consider doing this at a community college to save yourself a lot of money.
