Who knows? My guess it was part of an all out effort to determine all the properties of a right triangle. It has been very helpful in constructing right triangles and making sure two surfaces meet at right angles. Carpenters used the 3-4-5 triangle thousands of years ago.

first of all it is actually the Pythagorean theorem and there really isn't a purpose but it is to show that the two legs of a right triangle can be squared and added together to equal the square of the length of the hypotenuse

It was probably just some way to show the relationships between three sides of the triangle, the hypotenuse, the adjacent side and the opposite side. I have no idea.
