Darling - follow in the footsteps of the great TS Eliot. DARE to disturb the universe. Be any blessed thing you want to. If you want to be a journalist and a poet - go for it. Poetry books arent real big sellers anymore - so why not blur the edges a bit? Write a book that's part journalistic, part poetry, part memoir and part short story. Something like the Va Tech tragedy would be a wonderful topic. Express yourself in as many ways as you want to. I'm on your side. Go ahead - eat a peach - go for it. Pax - C.

Your role is just defined by your purpose, and you can certainly do both, although it would be difficult to truly do both at the same time.
To be a journalist you are dealing in truth and fact, and attempting to report or document actual events and people. As a poet, you are commenting, critiquing, observing, and emoting about all kinds of things, and while this can be largely descriptive, poetry is ultimately interpretive and colored by the author. The goal of a journalist is to remain objective.
A journalist can certainly be poetic and graceful in how they write, and a poet can certainly document events, they are still somewhat distinct.
So, the point is, you can do both, but to be truly effective at either you must wear these hats at different times.

A journalist is a person who practices journalism, and journalism is a profession. A poet is a person who writes poetry. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Journalism and poetry are separate mediums and rarely cross paths; however, it is possible for people to cross from one field into the other. It's tough to be both at the same time, though..
