A Catholic school education is very good. Generally speaking a student who graduates high school from 1st grade at a Catholic School has the equivalent of an Associates Degree for an education. But the child will also be brainwashed into the Catholic Religion for the rest of their lives. Once a Catholic always a Catholic, even if you become lapse, you'll still remain Catholic.

How do I know? I went to Catholic school from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades until my mother took me out and placed me in the Boston Public Schools in the 4th grade. I guess she couldn't afford it any more. But in the 4th grade I had read Moby Dick while some of the public school 4th graders couldn't recite the alphabet or tell time from a clock! The public schools were a horrendous experience for me and the bullies and general stupidity left me angry for the rest of my life.

I would home school a kid before I ever sent them to a public school.

Yes, Catholic schools almost always provide a better academic education than the public schools in the area. I suggest you visit during class time and you'll see right away that the kids are more disciplined than the public school kids. There is NOT the brainwashing that there used to be. Most of the teachers are lay people, and the kids learn about religion, but are not heavily indoctrinated. Religion is now such a part of our culture, that you will just be giving your daughter a more rounded education, and if she is ultimately not a believer, she will still have a good grounding in ethics from her Catholic education.

In my opinion:

Catholic schools provide a very good moral and religious base for children. As a rule they are also safer than public schools.

Educationally, most of them are above average. Although some are exceptionally good and a very few are bad. Your school or the diocese should have some test scores for comparison.

In general, Catholic schools do a good job with average and above average kids.

However the resources of most Catholic schools are limited. If students need extra attention due to being way over or way under average, then their needs may not be properly met.

With love in Christ.

Not really - the only benefit is the class size may be smaller. Teachers at private schools can get a teaching credential with much less schooling than teachers in public schools. That means that they have a lot less experience with children, discipline, teaching and the subject-matter.

I think public school is a good option, but be very involved, do homework with your child every night, develop a relationship with the teacher, and don't hesitate to hire a tutor if you can't spend enough time with your child going over their homework.

The best way to get your child a good education is to show them at home that learning is rewarding - take her to the library, read books with her, do math word problems together, be very curious about things...like if she sees a hot air balloon in a story and she's very intrigued, look up hot air balloons in the encyclopedia, on the internet, find pictures of them, have her draw them, read all about them, ride in one, etc.

What you might do with that extra money is move to a house in a better school district...rent/mortgages in those areas are usually more expensive!

If you think about it, it's really not that much. $125 a month (your share) for a private school education? Definitely worth it if both you and your child want it.
Find ways to save some extra money. Skip the sodas and fancy coffees. Pack your lunch for work, instead of eating out. Quit smoking. Skip eating out for dinner. Start a change jar. Just some ideas... they don't all work for everyone, but just some ideas. Needs vs. wants. You know where you can skim off money in your own budget... :)
Also, does the school offer help with tuition costs? Lower them for low income families? Let you spread it out over 12 months? Would your family be willing to help? Maybe $ for bdays and Christmas, instead of presents, to help cover some of the tuition.
If you really want it, you can make it happen!!

Yes, Catholic schools are good. They generally offer high quality education and provide spiritual activities for the children. Their school campuses are safe. The students are respectful and well-behaved. If you could afford to send your child to a Catholic school, go ahead. Catholic education is definitely the best legacy you can give to your child.

I believe that it is not a good choice since there is not much of a difference between Catholic school and public school besides the fact that you learn religion and might/ might not have to wear uniform. You mind as well save that money for something else.
