In recent history, here in America, women couldn't vote, own property in their own name if they were married, or divorce a husband even if he were abusive or had abandoned a wife/family. Few types of jobs were open to single women who worked outside the home and they were almost always paid less than men for equal work. Women who worked were expected to quit or were fired when they married or if they became mothers.
Women are still paid less than men for equal work--it is simply amazing and cruel when most working women are supporting a family either with or without a partner.
Bit by bit, American women have won civil rights that every American man was born with. The equal rights amendment would guarantee us those rights. Perhaps you are too young to have personal experience with these situations, but your mother or your grandmother is not. Ask them about these situations and see how it affected the lives of people in your family.

the only way your essay can be persuasive is if its on a topic that you actually care about... for instance, you could write a bland overdone essay on the flaws of George W. Bush, or you could write a persuasive essay on just the opposite, while people will not all agree with it, its a breath of fresh air. another interesting topic is the healthcare bill, persuade people on way or the other- whatever your opinion is: i reccomend a thesis that includes this in it: No one disagrees with the idea of universal healthcare, in fact the idea of everybody having some type of coverage is a good one, but its how we go about doing it that which creates the mess and disagreement. just some thoughts
