~The act gave rise to the creation of the first concentration camps known to the western world. Under Martin Van Buren in 1838, the camps were established at Ross's Landing (Chattanooga, Tennessee), Fort Payne, Alabama, and Fort Cass (Charleston, Tennessee). They were called reservations. The term 'concentration camp' wasn't coined until the British came up with it in 1899 with the Boers, but the US model served as the blueprint for the Brits. Hitler would also use the US model in Nazi Germany, starting in 1933.

As to the 'stupid question', you are absolutely right. All you have to do is type a few key words and (god forbid) read what you find and think a little to come up with the answer yourself. I doubt that your teacher wants you to put out that kind of effort though, and I know he/she doesn't expect you to learn the material, learn to read, learn to think or learn to research. Gracious, that would be inhuman.

The Indian removal act removed Indians from their native lands, and drove them West of the Mississippi. How was this important? It killed hundreds of thousands of women and children, who were already sick from not having food, medicines, or clothing because of the white men already crowding them into overcrowded reservations. Andrew Jackson is the president who enforced the armies behind the slaughters. I would NOT in any way say that this was important. Schools still teach this dribble? If I were to ask "How important was it that Hitler imprisoned the Jews?" Do you know what kind of backlash I would receive! Tell your teacher I said THAT!

The indian removal act was an act that gave states the privilage of basically kicking indians off their land, but in turn to kicking them off, they had to give the indians a section of land that they owned. The land was usually towards the northwest corner of the u.s. It was normally what is now oregan and washington.

It eventually led to the Cherokee "Trail of Tears" which killed over 4000 Indians. It's worth noting that the Cherokee were paid to relocate and were given land in Oklahoma. Representatives of the Cherokee agreed by Treaty to relocate, but they didn't enjoy popular support (of course).

Nonetheless, a quite dark chapter in the U.S. history book - but pale compared to other conquering powers (see Spanish and Romans)
