You want your potting soil to be rich in nutrients, have good drainage and a good mix of particle sizes. I'd look for something that feels and looks a bit like moist brownies, only darker. It should be dark brown to black, soft, moist and crumbly, and you should not be able to squish it up into a ball without it crumbling all apart again when you open your hand. As long as it smells like dirt, you should be fine..
