If Neither, what fish? Except for livebearers. They live shortly.

Male bettas typically like to be alone in a tank but occasionally you can put them in a tank as long as he is grossly outnumbered. I wouldn't suggest putting another fish in the tank if that is the only other fish in the tank with him. Gouramis are part of the betta family and if it is the only other fish it the tank, one of them will probably kill the other as gouramis can be very aggressive also. Cherry barbs are small, and can be pick on to death. But on RARE occasions, a betta can live with another fish approx his same size. But overall, I think your betta is happy alone.

Cherry barbs no doubt. SOME barbs are nippy, but cherry barbs are only very rarely a problem to other fish. Just like with all schooling fish 6+ in a group makes for fewer problems and happier fish.

Another reason I would pick the barbs is they are smaller and you can fit more in the tank as well as the fact that they like the middle to bottom part of the tank while the betta likes the top. The gourami would hang out at the top 1/3 of the tank most of the time too.

More fish, more activity and spread out better in the tank. Those things make me pick the Cherry barbs.

Barbs can be a bad tank mate for bettas but cherry barbs are the best variety to put in a 10 gallon or larger. Dwarf gourami's are a good choice too. You also need a small pigmy cory.

betta's are calm, slow fish, and will be most comfortable with others like that. Cherry barbs aren't nippy for barbs, but they're still very active, which, even without nipping, can make a betta uncomfortable. Gouramis are territorial as well, which means you risk them fighting over the tank. So I agree, niether.

It is a myth that they can't be kept with other fish - people misunderstand their aggression, which is mainly against their own kind or similar looking fish. I keep my Betta with cardinal tetra's and cory catifsh in a 15 gallon planted tank. The betta is more active then he ever would be on his own, especially with all the plants to 'play' around in.

dwarf gourami - will fight with the betta, the gourami will win
cherry barb - while being one of the more peaceful of the barbs, i would still not keep them together for fear of the barb nipping at the betta's long fins.

so neither would be suitable tankmates for a betta.

definitely the cherry barbs. a dwarf gourami & a betta probably wouldn't get along very well.

Well goaramis will probly fight with the betta so i thing the barb is the way 2 go but they can get nippy too, so be careful.

unlike what andrew b said, do not put a female betta in with a male betta!! he will kill and then eat her... I know it sounds gruesome but it's true.

The barb would be a good tankmate as they are not as nippy as other barbs...

The gourami is another story, they can be dangerously territorial. so i wouldn't recommend that one.

Barbs can be nippy, same with that gourami... but that gourami needs a lot more room than those barbs.

Neither. I' ve been told (and then researched myself) that a cory catfish would do the best job. It likes the bottom and stays low while the betta prefers to stay up.
