I don't know what out of state school would be cheaper than your own in state school. The UC system is good. They have quality education available at most of the campuses. You have to always be careful of the living environment no matter what school you go to. For the money, I don't think you will be able to significantly beat the UC system in quality. In other words, do the cost/benefit analysis. Will the extra benefit outweigh the extra cost? You said that as an initial premise, the out of state school would be cheaper. If the quality is also superior, then that would be the place to go. However, if you are giving up some of the quality, then is the reduced cost a large enough factor to make the sacrifice worth while. You can debate the intrinsic value of going away from home as opposed to staying at home for school also. What is your independence worth to you?
When I went to college for the first time, I had to choose between a cheap local JC and an expensive private school out of state. I chose to leave home and spend my money at the university because I decided that the quality of education and the "on my own" factor were worth the extra cost.
Best wishes.

The University of California school system (NOT Cal State System) includes fine schools such as UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Berkley etc. These are or mostly Tier 1 Doctoral granting research schools and you really can't go wrong with any of them. If you are a California resident then basic tuition should still be far lower than attending out of state tuition in any state. It would be a great accomplishment and you would get a world class education from any University of California school.

Huh? I must have missed something. Negative remarks about CSULA? Just to clarify: The University of California (UC) system is different from the Cal State University (CSU) system. The UC system is considered "better" because the requirements for admission are higher. However, some CSU campuses (such as Long Beach) have excellent reputations for certain programs, such as teaching. Cal State LA (not to be confused with UCLA), is a fine university. Nothing wrong with it at all. Yeah, it's east of downtown and not very glam, but hey, it's still a 4-year college. If you are going there, congratulations. Don't pay any attention to the curmudgeons that lurk on these boards.

Take the UC route, unless you plan on going to an out of state school that you know has great academic standards....Take it from me, I "ventured" from Cali. and I've had to spend a whole year in the middle of two cornfields, with no public bus system...Weigh your options..Like will you have transportation, which leads to being able to get a job to support yourself(Besides work study)...Take some time to think about the location of your school, and the above things I stated....Good Luck!
P.S
It's not cheaper to go to school out of state, I believe some colleges do charge, for example california schools, that charge you an extra fee because you live out of state....Check with the schools...
and with instate schools, especially for california you can get more money help, for going to school here and being a resident, for example, the cal-grant, which is not transferable to schools outside california.

Well, I know you love your family, but do you like them? If you have a lot of family get-togethers, do you enjoy them? That's what I based my decision on. I moved from rainy Seattle to sunny Las Vegas. That was a good move for me. You can try leaving your family, but if you miss them you can always go home. I don't know about prices, but I assume the prices in California are higher. Another thing to consider might be your lover, if you have one. That might keep you at home. Or you could leave together. So many options!! But none are permanent, which is good for you. I hope I've helped you a little bit. Good luck to you!

It depends on your cash flow.
But a UC schools are good. And you have residnecy here. You wouldn't have that out of state making your costs higher.
